On April 6, 1917, the United States declared war against Germany. Soon, more than two million American soldiers would be fighting in France. Collegiate sisters were doing their “bit” for the war, from rolling bandages and knitting to working for the Red Cross. The Alpha Phi Board suggested that the Fraternity cancel the 1918 Convention, and for the first time in history, Alpha Phi cancelled its biennial event. Newly appointed chairman, Cora Allen McElroy came up with a plan for chapters, encouraging sisters to “Serve your country and Fraternity by giving a Liberty Bond to the Alpha Phi Endowment Fund." Beta alone purchased $500 worth of Liberty Bonds in one season.
