The Depression Years
The year 1932 was the depth of the depression, and unemployment was twenty-five percent. But Alpha Phi continued to expand, and desirous of adding another Southern chapter, the Vice President and Chairman of Extension asked three Birmingham alumnae to survey the University of Alabama. The conditions were favorable, and local alumnae pledged eight girls. On February 13, 1932, fourteen girls were initiated into the Beta Mu chapter.
