Alpha Phi Gets an Office
On New Year’s Day, 1921, in the heart of New York City, in an office building at 17 West 42nd Street, Romaine Loar (Beta-Northwestern) began her first day on the job as Alpha Phi’s first national executive secretary. The Fraternity was proud of her new office in Room 333, and it felt it had become a true part of the modern American business landscape. The renting of a Fraternity business office, the hiring of an executive secretary, and the efforts to systematize the administration of the organization’s work, “all meant that the intent was to give our Fraternity an efficient business administration.” Once again, Alpha Phi established a precedent as other members of the NPC found Alpha Phi’s securing a national office a decided step in advance for a women’s fraternity.
